 Cornpaws' hunting training
« Thread Started on Sept 3, 2008, 8:03pm »

Plainstar walked to the pot were he had cought some prey earlier that dey. He hoped there would still be some prey in the area. This would help him become familiar with the territory, wich would help him out alot. He sat down as he waited for his apprentice to catch up. He wondered if Cornpaw already knew how to catch rabbit, since she hadn't always been a clan cat.

Cornpaw followed her mentor until he stopped and sat down. She sat down net to him and looked around. The territory was rather pretty. "What does the hunters' crouch look like, Plainstar? I used to be a kittypet so I have no idea how to do it." She asked her mentor. She started to think about what hunting would be like. She thought it might be fun, but she had no idea. She began to think about if it would be easy or not, but soon stopped herself. She stopped herself so she could pay attenion to what her mentor, Plainstar, would say or do or maybe even both. She hoped he would demonstrate as well, so she could get an idea of how it was done.

Plainstar looked over at his apprentice, Cornpaw, and nodded. "I show you the best hunters' crouch for rabbits. It goes like this." He told his apprentice. He went low to the ground in his best hunters' crouch. "Try to keep your step light so the rabbit doesn't feel you coming. Also try to coming up from the back so it doesn't see you coming. Does that help at all?" He asked his appretnce hoping he awnsered her question, "If you ubterstand you can go out and try out some hunting tactics and moves." He hoped that she would have some luck with her hunting.

"Ok, I think I understand." Cornpaw replied to her mentor. She got up and looked around, she spotted a medium brown rabbit. She went into the hunter's crouch as best she could. She crept up on the rabbits back side. She kept her step as light as she could. She was within five mouse lengths when the rabbit spotted her and took off. She ran up after it, she got close and wack at it, with her claws out. She was a little late and the rabbit got away from her. She wasn't to disappointed, it was her first hunt. She walked back over to Plainstar. "Any tips? What can I work on to make it better?" She asked her mentor, not letting this failure get to her. She had to keep her spirits up if she wanted to help her clan at all.

"That was pretty good for a first hunt, Cornpaw. You were a little to the right of the rabbit though. Wait until you are within three mouse lenghts before you take off, if you can." He told his apprentice. He was impressed on how quickly she was learning thus far. He hoped her training would all be like this. He wondered if she would catch her next hunting attempt? He hoped she would, that would be good on her confidince levels.

Cornpaw scented a rabbit and was going to try again. She crouched down and stalked up at the rabbit. She got within Three or four mouse lenghts and took off for the rabbit. SHe was soon biting down on its neck, killing it swiftly. She picked up her rabbit and walked over to her mentor, very proud of herself.

(Please post a little more, thank you.)

Plainstar watched proudly as his apprentice walked toward him with a rabbit in her mouth. He figured he would challenge Cornpaw and have her try bird next. He knew it wasn't likely for her to get a bird first try, si he wasn't expecting a miricale or anything. "Well, Cornpaw." He said when she was in hearing range, "After we have made a kill we cover it with dirt. This keeps away other predetors and helps keep it fresher while we continue our hunt. Next I think I will let you try bird, now remeber the way you hunting style varys on what you are hunting. So, I would suggest experimenting with your differnt steps to find witch one best works for you." Plainstar hopped that Cornpaw took in all of what he had just said. He sat down, because he knew it would be awhile before either Cornpaw gave up or did cath a bird. He also knew it would be very intresting to see what all she tried for hunting bird.

Cornpaw shook her head showing that she understood what Plainstar was telling her. She walked toward him a little more before dropping the rabbit and covering it in a layer of dirt. She looked at the rabbit and then put a little more dirt on top of it. Bird, how was she going to hunt bird, she thought a few moments before heading out into the tall grass to look for a bird. After awhile of searching she came acroos a large crow. She stopped and crept down wind of the bird, then tried a light bouncy step, but the bird almost instantly flew off. Her step must have been too bouncy, and she must have come above the grass. Maybe small steps Cornpaw thought, so she went looking for another bird. She found a small starling for all her efforts searching. She treid her new idea but qiuckly learned that it would take far to long to hunt one bird if she did that. She leaped up in frustration, scaring the bird away, there had to be something she was missing. She sat and thought, when suddenly she figured she could combine the two tequnies she had tried thus far and see how they worked. She quickly saw a large crow, almost identical to the one she had tried to hunt first. She crouched down and with small, light, nad somewhat of a spring in her step went forward. She got within one and a half fox lenghts away befor the bird noticed her. She instantly sprang up and barely manged to get on the bird's back, her wieght making it fall. She and the bird both hit the groung with a thud, and before wasting any time she bite the birds neck and killed it. Cornpaw happily picked up the bird and set off to fine Plainstar.

Plainstar sat down and had his doubts about whether or not Cornpaw would get the bird or not. He sat down and waited. He sat there for quite awhile and wondered if he should go looking for Cornpaw. He started to get up to go looking for her when he saw something bobbing in the grass. he wondered what it could be but quickly relized that it was Cornpaw coming. She looked happy, that must mean that she caught something. When she was closer he relized that she was carrying a huge crow. He was so surprised and happy that she caught a bird. "Wow! Good job!" He complimented, " We should eat well tonight! Well, theres not much more I can teach you about hunting, so lets go back and rest up in the camp. We will start your hunting training soon. I'll get the rabbit and you can carry your bird." He started toward camp, and when he got there he dropped the rabbit in the fresh-kill pile.

Cornpaw started to notiice how heavy her bird was, so she breifly put it on the ground. After a few moments brake she picked up her bird and followed her mentor back to camp. It seemed like it had been such a long time since she had been in the camp. She knew it had only been a few hours, but it had been a long day. She was excited that she would be starting her fighting traing soon. She knew that it would be much harder than the hunting training. Her stomach growled loudly, which made her notice how hungery she had gotten from hunting. By this time she was back in the camp, she dropped her bird in the fresh kill pile and took out the rabbit to eat.
